In the 50 years it has been operating, Thatcham has continued to revolutionise the way cars are made, making them safer and more secure with every year that passed.
They have also developed a security standard to help reduce car theft. Their work has helped to reduce it by 80% since the record highs in the 1990s. As technology improved and car theft became more sophisticated, so too have the devices they use to combat thieves, and that’s where we come in.
Many insurance companies will now insist on the fitting of a Thatcham-approved car tracker as part of your policy. Being abler to monitor a stolen vehicle through a tracker installed on the car can help reduce your premiums. In many cases, they will specifically request the installation of an ‘S5’ tracker. The ‘S5’ designation replaced Thatcham’s old ‘Category 5’ rating in January 2019.
Thatcham Categories & Their Features
Thatcham separates their different vehicle tracking products into categories. In 2018, there were 3 categories labelled 5, 6, and 7. In 2019, they simplified this slightly by having just two categories; S5 and S7. Each one represents the way the devices are designed, the features they have, and which criteria they meet before they can be installed. S5 is the higher of the two.
In terms of the S5, those trackers now come with all of the features of the previous category 5 and 6, although some of them are now optional. The driver’s ID tag, for example, can now be kept on the keys and the remote engine immobilisation is now optional.
